چکیده

The boreal forest biome occupies 13 x I06km1. It comprises approximately 25% of the world's forest land (Olson et al. 1983; Apps et al. 1993) and includes 2.6 x 106km1 of peatlands (Gorham 1991). Changes in the extent or functioning of the boreal forest wuld substantially modify global climate through (1) release of its large stocks of soil carbon (Post et al. Boreal forests have also been implicated as the "missing sink" for atmospheric carbon dioxide (Ciais et al. 1995). For these reasons, there has been considerable interest and speculation about future changes in the extent, structure , and functioning of the boreal forest. The functioning of the boreal forest is more tightly tied to its species composition than to climate. For example, in Alaskan white spruce forests there is virtually no change in soil carbon across the entire latitudinal range of boreal forest (July mean temperature from 10 to lS°C) (Michaelson et al. 1996). whereas there is a greater than twofold range in soil carbon between conifer and hardwood stands on north and south aspects of the same hill (Van Cleve et al. 1983), due largely to differences in the effects of different plant species on soil temperature and nutrient cycling (Flanagan and Van

Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...

Long-Term Record of Sampled Disturbances in Northern Eurasian Boreal Forest from Pre-2000 Landsat Data

Stand age distribution is an important descriptor of boreal forest structure, which is directly linked to many ecosystem processes including the carbon cycle, the land–atmosphere interaction and ecosystem services, among others. Almost half of the global boreal biome is located in Russia. The vast extent, remote location, and limited accessibility of Russian boreal forests make remote sensing t...

Variation in Carbon Storage and Its Distribution by Stand Age and Forest Type in Boreal and Temperate Forests in Northeastern China

The northeastern forest region of China is an important component of total temperate and boreal forests in the northern hemisphere. But how carbon (C) pool size and distribution varies among tree, understory, forest floor and soil components, and across stand ages remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we selected three major temperate and two major boreal forest types in northeastern ...

Remote Sensing Techniques in Monitoring Post-Fire Effects and Patterns of Forest Recovery in Boreal Forest Regions: A Review

The frequency and severity of forest fires, coupled with changes in spatial and temporal precipitation and temperature patterns, are likely to severely affect the characteristics of forest and permafrost patterns in boreal eco-regions. Forest fires, however, are also an ecological factor in how forest ecosystems form and function, as they affect the rate and characteristics of tree recruitment....
